140
The most beautiful thing to me about e-biking is the weight:load ratio. A 30kg bike carries 3 humans totalling 150kg. 5 times its own weight. We'll routinely whizz by 1600kg Range Rovers, typically carrying one adult, 0.05 times their own weight.

141
142
And it's not even like-for-like. Within a 25km radius in Dublin, e-biking is almost always faster.

193
It just occurred to me that US and UK folks probably can't tell when an Irish actor is doing an American or British accent. Almost always, that definitely doesn't work the other way. If you want an Irish accent in your production, the safest choice will always be an Irish actor. There are plenty to about!

206
The one thing I couldn't believe about "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" was that after casting an Irish actor and encouraging him to use his (real) Irish accent, they cast two kids for a flashback scene and had them do Oirish accents. There needs to be a forever rule in the world of production to never cast non-Irish actors in roles requiring Irish accents.

220
Finished "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" last night. I really enjoyed the book, and the graphic novel. I feel like people who make Game of Thrones stuff should simply never diverge from the books. The TV representations are at their best when they follow the books.

299
Good to see the Irish Times promoting cargo bikes as car alternatives. I'm somewhat down on the "economic" motivation, because fuck that: there's so much else going on, but these things need all the promotion they can get. For sure people need cars, but I can believe that 80% of the 80% who default to their car could be biking, and Dublin would be so much better for it. https://www.irishtimes.com/your-money/2026/04/22/how-a-cargo-bike-can-save-you-a-fortune-in-motoring-costs/

326
One thing that repeatedly boggles my mind about travelling in European cities is that they're often strong examples of "we could never do that".

327
328
People of all representations bike in Amsterdam (and the Netherlands) with no helmets, all shapes and sizes of people, totally normal, like it's nothing. No ceremony, just a smart default.

329
330
It's so frustrating that any group involved in city planning (looking at you Dublin) would look at the existence (not fiction) of this and not want to drop everything to make it a reality in their own city: following the lead from the Dutch over the last 50 years+.

385
I have been very happily whizzing to-and-fro to Dublin city centre on my eBike every day this week, avoiding any issues with fuel prices or protests. Presumably if only a small percentage of drivers switched to cycling rather than driving, it would have as much of an effect as government subsidies to reduce demand on fuel. It still boggles my mind that there are still so relatively few cyclists in Dublin (albeit that it definitely feels like an uptick in general).

But is it a case that I'm looking for the "big" things: compute, distribution, power etc. to be public domain, and that small companies would plug in to them?

920
921
It was really cool to answer his question "what is your philosophy?" and for it to neatly map to his impression. We discussed how traditional measures of success can be insufficient, and how we don't talk to our neighbours enough (a nice segue from my last post).

922
923
I feel like I'm busy busy busy for the next few months, but I really want to make sense for having conversations with people about how the world really doesn't seem optimised for joy and delight, but more and more designed in the pursuit of profit.

982
983
I have 4 consecutive weeks now of ferrying one boy or other to various summer camps, which would be 20 days with 2 car journeys each, and then driving to and from the office on one of the weeks. That’s 50 car journeys I won’t be taking in the next month alone. I just wish Dublin was further along in its bike infrastructure and that I wasn’t joining the minority of folks who want to live this way.

1023
1024
I think to experience joy to its fullest, you need to be vulnerable, and so I guess it makes sense that "powerful" people would want to stamp out joy fully because they can't properly experience it, but it makes for real-world tragedy.

1025
1026
And then for my part, it's hard to experience joy to its fullest in the knowledge that there’s so much basic injustice happening within reach.

1183

1184
Replies (so that I can update posts and add to them)

1185
Image support (for posting images that I don't want to put on third-party sites)

1186
Maybe ActivityPub / BlueSky

1187
Maybe the ability to mention folks and follow folks on other instances of this

1188

1189
1190
But so far as just somewhere to post that's easy to do, I can do it from my desktop or mobile easily, and with handy Markdown support, I am very, very happy. Should have done something like this years ago 😁.

1231
After playing with Figma Make, the idea of "AI" as an assistive tool has further made my head spin with the ethical grey area it represents. I've struggled for so long with translating what I think I see in my head with what I actually mean. I've found it very difficult to describe this to humans, but when I describe it to Figma Make, I get something visual and interactive to continue the discussion around. That is incredibly enabling for me.
