Codex session overnight-20260907-sheets owns this branch under the overnight suite implementation request. Scope: bounded atomic cell batch API; existing paste queue integration; complete validation before writes, one transaction and live publication, rollback of content/history/axis allocation, encrypted storage and authorization tests. Preserve individual cell write behavior. Fable reviews design and exact branch; deployed canary and green CI required before merge. Workbook tabs follow separately.

Independent spec review: Claude Fable (claude-fable-5-1).
Verdict: REQUEST CHANGES. The transactional-handle design is sound and GORM nested transactions do become savepoints on this dialector (verified: gormlite implements SavePoint/RollbackTo, and rastrillo does not set DisableNestedTransaction). Five things need fixing or pinning down before implementation starts; two more are advisory.
Blocking
"Built from the DB" must mean built from tx, or the writer pool deadlocks. rastrillo's writer pool is one connection (db.go:59). If the batch opens a.db.Transaction and then calls buildHandle(a.db, …), the reads route to replicas but recoverStale → persistTouched → h.db.Transaction (handle_batch.go:149, handle_set.go:230) needs the writer, which the outer tx holds. That is the exact AGENTS.md "scope tx, never the outer handle" deadlock, and it only fires on a tab with stale cells, so a clean test DB will never show it. The spec must say the tx handle's db field is the transaction, and every statement it issues, including the MaxCellsPerTab count and recovery, goes through it.
Cost is tab-sized, not batch-sized, and it lands on the single writer connection.buildHandle decrypts and parses every cell in the tab (handle_open.go:83-127). Done inside the write transaction, a paste into a 200k-cell tab holds the instance's only writer for the whole build, so every write on every sheet on the instance stalls, not just this tab. "Measure a 500-cell batch" will not reveal this. Either measure at large tab sizes (50k and 200k cells) and document, or restructure: hold live h.mu, build the tx handle from the reader pool before Begin, then point its db at tx for the writes only. The live mutex already serialises every write to this tab, so a pre-Begin read snapshot is consistent. Recovery writes during build then take the writer briefly and normally.
Nothing fallible may sit between outer commit and the live swap. If the commit lands and the swap does not (panic in report merge, Formats() read, marshal), the live handle serves stale values and versions until eviction, and SSE subscribers never hold a refcount so eviction may be soon or never. Specify: swap under h.mu as the first statement after Transaction returns nil, build the response afterwards from the live handle, and on any post-commit failure evict the live handle from the registry so the next Open rebuilds.
Define "over-limit resulting cell count" and bound the publication. Each of 500 SetReport calls may touch up to 5,000 dependents; the merged report is bounded only by tab size. One response and one SSE message of up to 200k cells is the size the Capped/Resync mechanism exists to avoid (handle_report.go:39-45, hub.go:27). Name the cap on merged reported cells, and say what happens past it. Recommendation: commit and publish Resync: true with the final version, as the single-cell path does.
Add a test that exercises recovery inside the transaction. Seed a tab with cells whose CacheVersion trails InputVersion, then run a batch. This is the only test that proves finding 1 is fixed, and it must be mutation-tested: building with a.db instead of tx should hang or fail it.
Advisory
Rejecting Capped is inconsistent with the single-cell route. Typing into a feeder cell with 6,000 dependents succeeds with Resync today; pasting one cell into it would 400. DB state after a capped write is consistent (dependents durably marked, handle_set.go:69-73), so commit-and-resync is safe and matches existing behaviour. If rejection stays, state why in the spec.
GORM never releases savepoints. A 500-cell batch leaves about 1,000 open savepoints until COMMIT. SQLite handles this, but note it in the cost paragraph so the measurement covers it.
Checked and fine: editor role and 404 isolation via openTab; validation order (coordinates, origin, pre- and post-translate length, parse) before any write; 1 MiB body and 500 distinct destinations bound the input; fixed response strings keep content out of errors; per-cell AppendInput inside the tx preserves history; lock order (live h.mu then writer) matches every existing handle write path, so no inversion; EnsureRow's unique-violation fallback works inside a SQLite transaction since a constraint error aborts only the statement; the client queue and post return-value change are straightforward and applyBatch's version check handles one merged message correctly.
Author response: transaction scoping and immediate postcommit swap are implemented; adding explicit spec wording, stale-recovery regression and merged-report cap. Measure 50k/200k tab batch cost before deciding whether the initial rebuild is acceptable. Capped recalculation will remain atomic rejection for this bounded first batch protocol and be stated explicitly.

Fable revision-2 review was refused: "You have hit your session limit; resets 8:50pm (Europe/Dublin)." No review approval is claimed; retry after reset. Revision-2 changes cap merged output at 5,000 cells and add transaction recovery regression. Go overlay mutation replacing tx with the outer DB deadlocks and is caught in three seconds. Large-tab timing for 500 writes: 50k cells 660ms, 200k cells 2.326s, including instance-wide writer blocking. Both costs are explicit in the spec.

Atomic batch deployment is now BLOCKED by a reproduced existing freshness defect. Across actual handle release/reopen: 500-cell paste version503, clear version1004, next edit version4. The browser discards that next edit as older than its current view. Cells derive version only from surviving content/cache rows, so clearing the newest data loses the ordering watermark. Preparing an explicit prerequisite branch fix/durable-tab-versions with additive tab metadata, transaction rollback and migration coverage; no atomic production deploy until it is reviewed and resolved.

Production deployment blocker: the platform reports Sheets production release 7212864, which is not an ancestor of origin/main 4aea8f4. Their common ancestor is 8ed3926. Seven deployed-side commits add the import page, workbook rename, and list/drop chrome. Main adds only suite-doctrine amendments to AGENTS.md, PRODUCT.md and the design spec. A main-based batch candidate would remove deployed routes and UI.
Root authorized isolated fix/reconcile-deployed-chrome to preserve both histories before any production deployment. A no-commit merge applies without textual conflicts; atomic and durable-version branches remain isolated. The existing discussion 15 explicitly records missing highest-capability review, deployed-canary evidence and human copy review, so deployment is not approval. Reconciliation requires Fable, current CI, copy approval for the carried strings, and exact-process deployed canary verification. No merge to main or deploy has occurred.

Fable review at1aca44c, actual claude-fable-5-1: revised SPEC APPROVE with wording amendments; ATOMIC CODE REQUEST CHANGES. Blocking: commit browser queue request-count/failure-stop proof, fix obsolete serial-write comments. Server implementation verified sound. Mutation evidence reproducibility: /tmp/sheets-batch-overlay.json replaces buildHandle(tx,h.sealer,h.tabID) with buildHandle(h.db,h.sealer,h.tabID) at handlewritebatch.go:41; TestCellBatchRecoversStaleCacheInsideTransaction fails by 3-second deadlock. Source is unchanged by overlay.
Verdicts, reviewed by Claude Fable 5.1 (claude-fable-5-1) at HEAD 1aca44c, read-only.
Revised SPEC (revision 2): APPROVE, with two wording amendments for revision 3. All five original requests are addressed and I verified each against code, not the answers.
ATOMIC CODE 4aea8f4..37c8055 as it stands at 1aca44c: REQUEST CHANGES. The server side is correct and I found no functional bug. Two things the spec promises are missing or now false in the client, and both are small.
Blocking (code)
The spec's client-queue tests do not exist. The spec's Tests line requires "client queue one-request and stop-on-failure behavior". Nothing in the repo references the queue or the batch route outside the two static files and the handler. There is no JS harness in go.mod or the Makefile, so the honest home is the browser drive. Add to tools/drive/clipboard.mjs: intercept the route, assert a paste of a block produces exactly one request to the batch path, and, for a cut of more than 500 cells with the first batch forced to 500, assert no second batch is sent. Or amend the spec to say this is proven only on the canary drive, and say so in the discussion.
Comments now assert the opposite of the code.internal/sheets/static/clipboard.js:31-32 says the cap is sized against serial writes and to raise it "when a batch cell route lands, and not before". clipboard.js:87-88 points to a cellqueue comment explaining "why they go one at a time"; that comment was deleted wholesale in the diff, so cellqueue.js now carries no rationale at all, including the two failed concurrent designs it was written to prevent. Fix both comment blocks and restore a short "one atomic batch per 500; serial across chunks; stop on the first failure" header. The spec's "clipboard.js untouched" should be narrowed to "no behaviour change".
Verified (code)
Recovery inside the transaction: staged handle built on tx (store/handle_write_batch.go:41); dbresolver skips routing inside an sql.Tx, gormlite implements SavePoint/RollbackTo (gormlite/sqlite.go:237), so nested Transaction calls in setContent, setBlank, persistTouched and recoverStale are savepoints. The mutation log shows the 3-second deadlock panic when built from the outer DB.
Post-commit swap: lines 91-94 are the first statements after Transaction returns nil; nothing fallible sits between commit and swap. Report assembled inside the tx; wire formatting after.
Final values, clear, rollback, events: dependent-then-feeder order yields 42, clear yields derived 0, injected failure on the third event insert rolls back rows, cols, history, live graph, live version, and (watermark test) content_version. Two input events per two-cell batch.
Caps: per-edit Capped and merged >5000 both reject atomically; MaxCellsPerTab counted on tx before commit.
Bounds, auth, translation: 1 MiB body, trailing JSON, empty, >500, duplicates, negative coords, half-specified origin, pre- and post-translate 8 KiB all refused without writes or publication; viewer, commenter, stranger, cross-sheet all 404; unsigned 403. Translation =A1+$B$1 one row down stores =A2+$B$1.
Live publication: one message, byte-identical to the HTTP body, after commit and swap, before the response.
Browser queue: chunks of 500, serial, post now resolves true/false, false stops the chain, done only after every chunk, overlapping invocations serialised via tail; failure refetches.
Watermark interaction at 1aca44c: staged reads content_version on tx; recovery stamp and every nested advance roll back with the outer tx; live adopts staged.nextVersion. Staged starts at watermark+2 while a retained live handle sits at watermark+1, so the first batch stamp can skip one number. Harmless, monotonic.
Cost: re-measured here, 500 writes on a 50,000-cell tab: 682 ms (spec says 660 ms). Batch tests pass under -race at HEAD.
Spec amendments (revision 3)
Rewrite the Tests line so the client-queue proof names where it lives (drive script or canary gate). It currently claims a test the repo cannot hold.
Replace "leaving clipboard.js untouched" with "no behaviour change to clipboard.js; comments updated".
Update the Status line (docs/superpowers/specs/2026-09-07-atomic-cell-batch.md:3) to record this review and its outcome.
Advisory, not blocking
Publish-after-unlock reorder is pre-existing (handlers_grid.go:150-151, mirrored at handlers_cell_batch.go:63): a concurrent single-cell write with a lower version can publish after the batch and be discarded by clients. Batches widen exposure but do not create it. Later slice.
Half-specified origin 400s on the batch route but is ignored on the single route. Stricter is fine; note it.
1 MiB body is below 500 × 8 KiB, so a batch valid per cell can be refused as "Malformed request." with 400 rather than 413. Document or raise.
Mutation log records only the failing output, not the mutation applied, and came from the overnight-batch worktree. Record "buildHandle(h.db, …) at handlewritebatch.go:41" in the discussion so it is reproducible.
Cost trigger "measured unacceptable latency" has no number. Suggest a pilot p95 threshold, since at 200k cells the instance-wide writer stalls for about 2.3 s per paste.
Menu Clear (static/commands.js:70) still fires concurrent single-cell writes, the pattern the queue exists to avoid. Out of scope here.
Human-copy gate is unaffected: only existing fixed strings are used. The production path remains reconciled chrome a75c7a9 plus pending copy and the deployed canary browser gate; an isolated atomic-only canary can certify batch plus durable code once root approves the fixture.

Atomic review fixes pushed atd35cf94 on the durable candidate branch. tools/drive/batch-checks.mjs is reusable real-editor proof: native paste500 sends one batch; native cut>500 receives a deliberately forced first-batch500 and must send no next chunk. Queue completion barrier establishes completion rather than an arbitrary wait. Both clipboard.mjs and new tools/drive/canary-batch.mjs invoke it.
Local real-browser validation passed using /usr/bin/chromium. A served-source mutation replacing if(ok===true)return step() with unconditional return step() triggers the exact failed-first-chunk assertion; trackedsource unchanged. This validates the harness, not deployed canary behavior. The canonical canary script additionally requires exact isolated HTTPSorigin, private authstate, candidateprocessSHA and rejects any POST/signin. Updated comments restore the two prior concurrency failures and batching rationale. Focused Fable rereview/full checks now running.

Fable APPROVE revised atomic SPEC revision3 and ATOMIC CODE at d35cf9494fe45bd729722ccb5ca0a52b44f7eb91, actual model claude-fable-5-1. Full make test and exact-head remote CI green. This head includes separately-approved durable watermark code (unchanged since1aca44c). Clean make release binary is available in overnight-versions/sheets-arm64 stamped d35cf94. Canary browser verification remains required; production additionally requires preserved deployed chrome reconciliation and human carried-copy approval. No production deployment.
Verdict at d35cf94, read-only: APPROVE revised SPEC (revision 3) and APPROVE ATOMIC CODE. Both prior blockers are resolved and I verified each against the code, the evidence files, and CI rather than the description.
tools/drive/batch-checks.mjs drives a real click, then real Ctrl+V of a 25×20 block and asserts exactly one POST to the batch route carrying 500 cells. It then writes a 501st cell, selects 525 cells, routes the batch path to answer 500, presses real Ctrl+X, and asserts exactly one refused chunk of 500 blanks.
The barrier is sound. Enqueueing an empty job on the shared tail resolves only after the prior chain, and the chain is guaranteed to already be on tail because the script first awaits the intercepted request. No sleeps.
It is wired into both clipboard.mjs (as a checked step) and canary-batch.mjs. The canary script refuses a non-HTTPS or wrong origin, a world-readable auth state, a missing candidate SHA, a version mismatch, and any signin POST.
The local harness imports the repo helper, not a copy, and serves cellqueue.js with the exact mutation (return step(); unconditional). The result file records the mutation as detected. grid.js resolves false on a non-OK response rather than rejecting, so the mutation actually reaches the changed branch.
Blocker 2, stale comments: resolved. The cellqueue.js header names both discarded-reply and refetch races and states serial chunks with stop on first failure. The three clipboard.js sites now describe the batch route, the cap's real reason, and the queue's ordering and failure behaviour. All match the code.
Spec revision 3. All three requested amendments are applied: the Tests line names the files and calls browser checks a deployed-canary gate outside make test, the clipboard line says "no behaviour change", and the Status line records the revision 2 outcome. The new paragraph adds the 1 MiB aggregate bound, the both-coordinates origin rule, and p95 investigation thresholds.
Checks. Full make test log passes through the -race stage. Exact-head CI for d35cf94 reports success on all steps via amadan ci status.
Advisory, not blocking.
In canary-batch.mjs the second paste's wait on T25 equalling 500 is already true from earlier steps. The request-count assertion is the real proof, so this only weakens the wait, not the check.
The post-failure grid assertion in batch-checks.mjs holds whether or not a refetch ran, since the grid is never cleared before the response. It proves state intact, not that refetch fired.
The Status line still says the focused code re-review is pending. Record this verdict there in the follow-up, plus the discussion, per the standing rule that decisions live in discussions.
Deployed canary, human-copy, and reconciliation prerequisites are unchanged and still stand between this and production.

Isolated deployment and authenticated browser gate completed 2026-09-07 ~21:26 UTC. Approved writer aca6668fa2765eba5c6b70b27f37d1071fbec973 was clean-built with fresh run ID r20260907-f0d51843ba611261, deployed only canary/overnight-batch at overnight-sheets.bds.oncarlos.com, environment overnight-batch. Actual GET /api/version returned aca6668-fixture-r20260907-f0d51843ba611261; /healthz 200, /signin and /sheets 404. Exact observed /data/overnight-sheets.bds.oncarlos.com.db and /run/carlos/overnight-sheets.bds.oncarlos.com.sock guards remained intact. Writer could serve only after guarded empty-database initialization succeeded.
Unset all three SHEETSFIXTURERUNID/TOKENHASH/EXPIRES_AT variables, then replaced channel with exact reviewed ordinary d35cf9494fe45bd729722ccb5ca0a52b44f7eb91, built via make release. Actual /api/version d35cf94 verified before successful committed tools/drive/canary-batch.mjs run. Real deployed browser evidence: native 500-cell paste one batch request, 442ms; second-page live update; clear then paste visible; invalid late formula rolls back whole batch; reload persistence; scriptless table; deliberately failed first cut chunk stops remaining queue (one request). No POST /signin or email delivery attempted.
Honest convergence caveat: both CLI 45s deploy watches timed out during adoption/wake. Scoped restart selected only the canary environment/host. Writer root deliberately returns 404; direct /healthz and process-version receipts established success. First browser invocation failed its version guard with transient 'instance failed to wake' and made no editor assertions. Retried only after direct /api/version returned d35cf94; full committed gate then passed. No guard or code changed.
Teardown: normal POST /signout returned 303 /signin; replaying original saved cookie on /sheets also returned 303 /signin. Fixture environment variables verified absent, private raw-token and browser-state files removed. Canary remains ordinary d35cf94; production process remains 7212864 and edge channel unchanged. Synthetic workbook remains isolated in canary. This certifies ordinary session validation and batch behavior, not email delivery.
Evidence: /tmp/sheets-canary-writer-receipt.json; /tmp/sheets-canary-batch-result.json; /tmp/sheets-canary-batch-browser.log; /tmp/sheets-canary-teardown-result.json. Existing independent Claude Fable 5.1 approvals and exact-head green CI remain unchanged. Production deployment remains blocked by source reconciliation and pending user copy review; no production merge/deploy performed.
