amadan
gate: the e2e witnesses are dealt across shards (E2E_SHARDS, default 4)
Three of the last four CI runs ended as a bare 30-minute step timeout with no gate output: the suite under -tags e2e grew from one smoke test to 57 witnesses (about ten minutes alone) and ran as one process beside every other job. It is now dealt across shards with the split packages' fence: every listed test to exactly one shard, a shard matching nothing fails the gate.
